Trump Endorses New GOP Plan for Government Funding and Debt Ceiling Increase Ahead of Shutdown

Donald Trump, the President-elect, announced a new plan to fund the government and raise the debt ceiling. This announcement came just before a potential government shutdown. Trump urged Congress to pass the plan quickly, possibly by Thursday evening. His social media post coincided with Republicans claiming progress on a tentative agreement after intense discussions behind closed doors.

Trump Backs GOP Plan for Funding and Debt Limit

The proposed plan aims to keep the government operational for three more months. It includes disaster assistance for states affected by hurricanes and allows increased borrowing until January 30, 2027. "SUCCESS in Washington! Speaker Mike Johnson and the House have come to a very good Deal," Trump posted. However, it remains uncertain if Democrats, whose support is crucial due to Republican opposition, are involved in these negotiations.

Debt Ceiling Challenges

Speaker Mike Johnson faces challenges in meeting Trump's demands while maintaining his position. Federal offices are preparing for a shutdown as Friday's midnight deadline approaches. Trump stated that Johnson could remain speaker if he acts decisively on the debt limit issue. He warned of potential trouble for Johnson and Republicans if they fail to address the debt ceiling.

Trump's history of government shutdowns adds urgency to the situation. He led Republicans into the longest shutdown during Christmas 2018 and disrupted holidays in 2020 by rejecting a bipartisan COVID-relief bill. Johnson is working tirelessly to broker a new deal ahead of a January 3 House vote to retain his position as speaker.

Vice President-elect JD Vance joined late-night meetings at the Capitol, accompanied by his young son in pajamas. Some of Trump's allies even suggested giving Elon Musk the speaker's gavel, highlighting that the speaker need not be a Congress member. Majority Leader Steve Scalise remarked on their productive meeting and ongoing efforts to reach an agreement.

Bipartisan Compromise

The bipartisan compromise between Johnson and Democrats includes $100.4 billion in disaster aid for hurricane-affected states. However, conservatives are outraged by the spending and additional provisions in the 1,500-page bill. Elon Musk used his social media platform X to amplify dissent among GOP lawmakers.

Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the plan and instructed Johnson to start over with new debt limit demands. This demand typically requires months of negotiation and faces opposition from within Trump's party. The current debt limit expires on January 1, 2025, potentially complicating the new administration's start.

As senior Republicans left a Thursday morning meeting in the House speaker's office, no resolution was reached yet. Rep. Tom Emmer noted that the situation remained fluid. Federal funding is set to expire at midnight Friday as Congress prepares a new temporary funding bill.

Democratic Response

House Democrats emerged from a closed-door meeting expressing anger over the collapse of bipartisan legislation. They insisted on sticking with their agreement with Johnson and Republicans. Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticized Trump's new debt limit demands as premature.

"This reckless Republican-driven shutdown can be avoided," Jeffries stated. "Republicans should simply do what is right for the American people and stick with the bipartisan agreement that they themselves negotiated." While Democrats have previously suggested lifting or removing debt limit caps, they seem unwilling to save Johnson from Trump's demands before he takes office.

The unfolding events highlight familiar tensions in Washington under Trump's leadership. As deadlines loom, lawmakers face pressure to find solutions amidst political discord and looming financial challenges.
