Trump Visits Asia to Meet Xi Jinping Amid Ongoing US Government Shutdown

President Trump embarks on his first Asia trip to negotiate investment deals and address trade tensions with Xi Jinping while the US government shutdown persists.

President Donald Trump embarked on his first Asian tour of this term, aiming to secure investment deals and foster peace. A significant meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping is planned to address the ongoing trade war. "I think we have a really good chance of making a very comprehensive deal," Trump stated aboard Air Force One. Discussions will include fentanyl trafficking and China's reduced soybean purchases from the US.

During a stopover in Qatar en route to Malaysia, Trump met briefly with Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani. They discussed security progress in Gaza. "It's working very well. It's all smooth. The US doesn't have to get much involved," Trump remarked. The trip coincides with a US government shutdown affecting federal workers' pay and air traffic operations.

Trade and Diplomatic Efforts

Trump's journey includes attending a regional summit in Kuala Lumpur, marking his second participation in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit during his presidency. This visit follows efforts to mediate a conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, with Malaysia's assistance in expanding a ceasefire. Trump acknowledged Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's role in these efforts, stating, "I told the leader of Malaysia, who is a very good man, I think I owe you a trip."

In Malaysia, Trump plans to meet Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who seeks a reduction in the 40% tariff on Brazilian imports. Lula also intends to address concerns over US military actions near South America. The White House has not confirmed this meeting yet.

Upcoming Meetings in Japan and South Korea

Following Malaysia, Trump's itinerary includes visits to Japan and South Korea. In Japan, he aims to secure USD 900 billion in investments for US projects by reducing tariffs from 25% to 15%. This visit comes shortly after Sanae Takaichi became Japan's first female prime minister. Trump will meet Takaichi, who was mentored by former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

In South Korea, Trump is set for a crucial meeting with Xi Jinping during the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Busan. This meeting follows tensions from China's export controls on rare earths and potential tariff hikes. Trump mentioned he might discuss the release of Jimmy Lai with Xi.

Speculation on North Korea

There is speculation about a possible meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, although it is not scheduled for this trip. South Korea's Unification Minister hinted at such a possibility earlier this month. However, Trump noted difficulties in reaching Kim due to limited communication channels in North Korea.

The trip underscores Trump's continued diplomatic engagements despite domestic challenges like the government shutdown. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer criticised Trump's departure amid these issues, saying, "America is shut down and the President is skipping town." Nonetheless, Trump's focus remains on international relations and trade negotiations during this tour.
