Trump Announces 3-Week Ceasefire Extension Between Israel and Lebanon

A fragile calm in the Middle East has been extended after Israel and Lebanon agreed to continue their ceasefire for three more weeks. The announcement was made by US President Donald Trump, who described the move as a "significant and historic" step toward stability.

Ceasefire Extension Announced After White House Talks

According to Trump, the decision followed a high-level meeting between officials from both countries at the White House in Washington. Speaking to reporters, he expressed optimism that the extension could help reduce tensions further.

He said both sides have agreed to continue the ceasefire-meaning no firing-for the next three weeks, while efforts to maintain peace continue.

Possible Meeting Between Leaders in Washington

Trump also hinted that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun may meet in Washington in the coming weeks.

Calling both leaders "great people," Trump noted that despite being neighbouring countries, their leaders have never met directly. A possible meeting could mark an important diplomatic step.

Israel and Lebanon Thank US for Mediation

Both Israel and Lebanon have expressed appreciation for the US role in facilitating the ceasefire extension.

Israeli Ambassador Yechiel Leiter said the agreement could open doors for a more formal and lasting peace in the future. Similarly, Lebanese Ambassador Nada Hamadeh Moawad thanked Trump, saying his involvement could help stabilise the region.

Hezbollah Remains a Key Concern

Despite the ceasefire extension, challenges remain. Israel has once again called on Lebanon to disarm Hezbollah, describing it as a major obstacle to long-term peace.
Israel has argued that removing the group's influence is essential for ensuring sovereignty and stability in Lebanon.

Trump Urges Action Against Iran's Role

Trump also pointed to Iran's involvement in the region, stating that cutting off funding to Hezbollah is necessary for lasting peace.

He emphasised that addressing external support to militant groups will be crucial if the ceasefire is to hold and evolve into a broader peace agreement.
