Trump Adviser Boris Epshteyn Denies Charges in Arizona's Fake Elector Case
In a significant development in Phoenix, Arizona, Boris Epshteyn and Jenna Ellis, lawyers associated with former President Donald Trump, along with James Lamon, a former US Senate candidate, have entered not guilty pleas to nine felony charges. These charges stem from their alleged involvement in efforts to overturn Trump's 2020 election loss in Arizona to Joe Biden. This case is part of a broader investigation into the submission of false electors in an attempt to challenge the election results.

The arraignment of Epshteyn, Ellis, and Lamon marks the completion of legal proceedings for all 18 individuals implicated in this case. Notably, other high-profile figures such as Rudy Giuliani, former Mayor of New York City, and Mark Meadows, Trump's former Chief of Staff, have also pleaded not guilty to related charges. The accusations focus on a scheme to submit fraudulent elector certificates asserting Trump's victory in Arizona, despite official results showing Biden's win by over 10,000 votes.
Epshteyn is specifically accused of aiding Giuliani in this endeavor and attempting to obstruct the certification process by Congress on January 6, 2021. Similar charges have been filed in other states including Michigan, Nevada, Georgia, and Wisconsin, highlighting the national scope of the investigation into the fake electors scheme.
Among the defendants are five lawyers linked to Trump and two of his former aides. While Trump himself has not been charged in Arizona, he is mentioned as an un-indicted co-conspirator. The indictment alleges that Ellis propagated false claims of widespread election fraud across several states and sought to influence the Arizona Legislature and then-Vice President Mike Pence to overturn the election results.
James Lamon, who unsuccessfully ran for a US Senate seat in Arizona in 2022, is accused of falsely claiming he was a legitimate elector. Despite no legal justification following unsuccessful challenges to the election outcome in Arizona, Lamon did not retract his vote.
The trials for Epshteyn, Ellis, and Lamon are scheduled for November 14. All three defendants participated in the court proceedings remotely. This case adds to the legal challenges faced by individuals associated with the Trump administration's efforts to contest the 2020 election outcome. Previously, Ellis was charged in Georgia for her role in disseminating false allegations of election fraud during a December 2020 hearing.
In December 2020, a group claiming to be Arizona's Republican electors convened to sign a certificate falsely stating Trump had won the state. This document was sent to Congress and the National Archives but was ultimately disregarded.
The unfolding legal drama underscores ongoing investigations into attempts to undermine the integrity of the 2020 presidential election. As these cases progress through the judicial system, they continue to attract national attention and raise questions about electoral processes and democracy in the United States.
