Trump Administration Initiates Departures Among Senior Leadership at State Department
A significant number of senior career diplomats have been asked to leave their top leadership roles at the State Department. This request comes from the incoming Trump administration, which intends to appoint its own personnel to these positions. Such changes in federal agencies are typical following a presidential election, as both career and non-career officials must submit resignation letters before a new administration takes office.

In some instances, resignations from career officials have not been accepted immediately. This allows them to remain in their roles temporarily, ensuring some continuity in the department's daily operations. However, this time, acting Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs John Bass and other senior officials will be reassigned. This includes all under secretaries of state responsible for management and policy, as well as assistant secretaries handling regional matters.
Impact on State Department Leadership
The personnel changes have not been officially announced, according to three current and former officials who spoke anonymously. If President Donald Trump does not quickly nominate replacements, many positions may be temporarily filled by the current subordinates of the outgoing officials. These subordinates are often career diplomats with extensive experience under both Republican and Democratic administrations.
Despite these shifts, career diplomats will continue to hold senior roles within the State Department. However, it remains unclear how many will retain their positions. The outgoing officials were informed last week that their resignations had been accepted. They were not dismissed but will remain as foreign service officers unless they choose to retire or leave government service.
This transition highlights the routine nature of personnel changes in federal agencies following elections. It underscores the balance between political appointments and career diplomats in maintaining continuity within the State Department's operations.
