'The Beast' Trial Starts: Suspected Serial Killer Faces Justice for Crime Spree

The trial of Keith Gibson, a suspected serial killer known as 'the Beast', began with jury selection. Gibson is accused in the deaths of several people during a violent crime spree in Delaware and Pennsylvania in 2021.

The trial of the alleged serial killer, Keith Gibson, who refers to himself as "the Beast," began on Monday with jury selection. Gibson is accused in the deaths of several people in Delaware and Pennsylvania during a violent crime spree that took place in 2021. The selected jury panel comprises 12 members who will preside over the case involving multiple charges against Gibson.

Amongst these are the killings of an Elsmere cellphone store manager and a Wilmington man during separate robberies. These fatal shootings form part of a wider range of charges encompassed within a 41-count indictment against Gibson, which also includes assault and attempted murder related to two other shootings that happened in Wilmington.

Additional Accusations

The Philadelphia district attorney has approved murder charges against him for his mother's death and that of a doughnut shop manager in Philadelphia. Furthermore, he has been named as a potential suspect in another double murder case from January 2021 which occurred in Philadelphia’s Germantown neighborhood.

Courtroom Proceedings

Gibson appeared dressed in civilian clothes for his court appearance on Monday. He was handcuffed while being escorted into and out of the courtroom but had them removed once seated at the defense table next to his attorneys Megan Davies and Richard Sparaco. Over 80 people have been listed as potential witnesses for this trial which is expected to span up to four weeks.

Past Criminal History

Gibson has had previous run-ins with law enforcement; he was released from Delaware prison where he served about 13 years for manslaughter and possession of firearms during felony commission just months before embarking on this violent rampage. After being identified as a suspect by Philadelphia police following his mother's killing on February 6, 2021, he was charged with violating his probation terms by leaving Delaware without permission.

Subsequent Release and Alleged Crimes

Gibson was sentenced to serve the remaining 6½ years of his manslaughter case sentence. However, upon hearing from Gibson's defense attorney that he had found work in Philadelphia and that leaving Delaware was a minor mistake, the judge reduced his sentence to just 31 days. He was released again on April 27, 2021. Less than three weeks later, prosecutors allege that Gibson shot and killed Leslie Ruiz-Basilio during a robbery at an Elsmere cellphone store on May 15 before stealing her car which was later found in Philadelphia.

Continued Violent Spree

Gibson is also accused of shooting Ronald Wright dead during a street robbery in Wilmington on June 5 while wounding another man. Earlier that same day, Christine Lugo had been confronted by a gunman as she opened up a Dunkin shop in north Philadelphia; police believe this gunman to be Gibson who they say took around USD300 before shooting her in the head and fleeing to Delaware. Authorities maintain that Gibson then robbed or assaulted three other people over the next three days until his arrest on June 8 following the robbery of a Wilmington Rite Aid store where he pistol-whipped a clerk.

In conclusion, Keith Gibson faces multiple charges related to several violent crimes committed across two states within a short span of time after being released from prison early last year. His trial promises to shed light on these gruesome incidents and deliver justice for the victims' families as well as society at large.
