Who Was Fazil Khan?

Fazil Khan, the victim of the fire, was employed as a data reporter at the Hechinger Report, affiliated with Teachers College, Columbia University. He held a degree from the Columbia Journalism School, where he was selected as a post-graduate fellow for the Global Migration project. Khan commenced his professional journey in 2018 as a copy editor at Business Standard and later served as a correspondent at CNN-News18 in Delhi. Relocating to New York for further studies in 2020, Khan was tragically caught in the fire incident.

According to the New York Fire Department, the blaze was ignited by a lithium-ion battery, resulting in Khan's death and injuries to 17 others in the six-storey apartment building, St. Nicholas Place, situated in Harlem. The fire erupted around 2 pm on Friday on the third floor of the building, leading to a dramatic rescue operation.

Rescue Efforts and Aftermath

Firefighters rescued 18 individuals from the building, with 12 of them transported to a nearby hospital, four of whom are in critical condition.
