Seventeen individuals are unaccounted for after a tourist yacht sank in the Red Sea, according to Egyptian authorities. The incident occurred despite prior warnings about turbulent seas. The yacht, carrying 31 tourists from various countries and 14 crew members, had embarked on a five-day trip from Marsa Alam. The UK Foreign Office confirmed it is assisting several British nationals and their families following the incident. Reports suggest British citizens might be among those missing.

Rescue Efforts and Investigation

The governorate received a distress signal from the yacht shortly before dawn on Monday. The cause of the sinking remains unclear, but the Egyptian Meteorological Authority had warned of rough seas and high waves over the weekend, advising against maritime activities on Sunday and Monday.

The Egyptian military is working with local authorities to coordinate rescue operations. Many tourist companies have reduced or halted Red Sea travel due to regional conflicts posing safety risks.

Company Response and Vessel Details

A representative from Dive Pro Liveaboard, the company operating the yacht, declined to provide information when contacted by The Associated Press. The Sea Story, as per their website, was constructed in 2022 and accommodates up to 36 passengers.

The situation highlights ongoing concerns about maritime safety in the area. Authorities continue their search efforts while investigating the circumstances surrounding the yacht's sinking.
