Top NYC Building-Safety Official Faces Corruption Charges Over Alleged Bribes
Ex-Buildings Commissioner Eric Ulrich is accused of taking bribes in the form of cash, New York Mets tickets and a luxury apartment discount. He allegedly repaid these bribes with favors while serving as Mayor Eric Adams' buildings chief. His defense attorney has said that he intends to plead not guilty.
The former top building-safety official in New York City, Eric Ulrich, has been accused of taking bribes from a real estate developer, a restaurateur and others. The allegations include receiving cash, New York Mets tickets, a discount on a luxury apartment and other benefits. In return for these illicit gifts, prosecutors allege that Ulrich repaid the individuals with favours.
Charges Levied

Ulrich is currently awaiting arraignment on charges of bribery, conspiracy among others. Six co-defendants have also been charged with bribery in relation to this case. Despite the serious nature of these allegations, defense attorney Sam Braverman stated that Ulrich intends to plead not guilty.
Multiple Roles Exploited
In addition to serving as Mayor Eric Adams' buildings chief, Ulrich held several influential positions within the city's government including city councilman and advisor to the first-term mayor. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg accused Ulrich of using each elected and appointed role he held in New York City government illegally for personal gain.
"At every possible turn, he allegedly used his taxpayer-funded positions as city councilmember then senior mayoral advisor and finally Department of Buildings commissioner to line his pockets," said Bragg. Both Bragg and Adams are Democrats while Ulrich who raised money for Adams' campaign is a Republican.
No Accusations Against Current Mayor
It should be noted that despite the involvement of his close associate in such serious allegations; Mayor Adams himself isn't accused of any wrongdoing at this point time. On the contrary; it was under Adam's administration that Ulrich resigned from his post as city buildings commissioner last November just six months after his appointment amid reports that he was being questioned by prosecutors as part of an investigation into potential corruption.
Conclusion
The case against former Buildings Commissioner Eric Ulrich represents a significant blow to the integrity of New York City's government. The allegations highlight the potential misuse of power within public office and underscore the need for stringent checks and balances in our governing systems. It is hoped that justice will be served, restoring faith in the city's administration.
