How Tim Walz Won Over Young Voters by Branding the GOP as 'Weird'

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has been actively portraying Donald Trump and Republicans as "weird" to the American public. "These are weird people on the other side. They want to take books away. They want to be in your exam room," Walz stated in a TV interview last month. This message began with news interviews and quickly spread across social media, especially among young Americans.

Walz Brands GOP Weird to Young Voters

Walz's Appeal to Young Voters

Walz's ability to discuss policy in simple terms and his understanding of internet culture have propelled him to national prominence. His popularity among Gen Z voters, who will be crucial for Democrats in November, has grown significantly. Known as "the cool dad" online, his selection as the Democratic running mate sparked a wave of memes, including one captioned, "To the window to the Walz," referencing a 2003 rap song by Lil Jon and the East Side Boyz.

Jennifer Mercieca, a historian at Texas A&M University who wrote a book on Trump's rhetoric, commented on this strategy. "The opposite of normalising authoritarianism is to make it weird, to call it out and to sort of mock it," she said. "To say, Hey, that's a weird thing you're doing, calling your opposition enemies instead of saying that they're good people who have different policy preferences."

Republican Response

However, Republicans have started using the same tactics against Walz. Recently, they labelled him as "weird" and "radical." Trump sent a fundraising email on Tuesday calling Walz "Dangerously Liberal" and claiming he would "unleash HELL ON EARTH." Despite this, Walz's legislative record on issues like protecting abortion rights, legalising recreational marijuana, and restricting gun access has made him popular with young voters nationwide.

The Democratic Party is now focusing on a new generation of candidates who aim to label Republican policies and actions as abnormal. Democrats believe that Walz, a 60-year-old Midwestern dad chosen as their vice presidential nominee on Tuesday, is the most effective messenger for this new approach. "Gov. Walz can do the job and helps reinforce that we're team normal," freshman Democratic Rep. Greg Landsman of Ohio said in a statement Tuesday. "We're pragmatic, reliable and bipartisan."

Support from Young Activists

Voters of Tomorrow, a Gen Z-led organisation representing young political activists and voters, has fully supported Walz after weeks of campaigning for him. They praised his dedication to educating and empowering young people as both a teacher and public servant. Santiago Mayer, the group's executive director, stated, "Governor Walz gets bonus points for articulating exactly how young Americans feel about Donald Trump and JD Vance: They are weird."

Walz's straightforward language about policy and politics has resonated with many young voters. On TikTok, users created 60-second montages of Walz discussing various topics, including the new Charli XCX album Brat and criticising GOP vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance for his comments on "childless cat ladies." In one MSNBC clip with over 150,000 likes on TikTok, Walz says, "Go ahead and continue to denigrate people. Go ahead. My God, they went after cat people. Good luck with that."

The Democrats' new strategy aims not just to appeal to Americans' fears about another Trump presidency but also to plainly label Republican policies as abnormal. This approach marks a shift from their previous efforts over the last eight years to defeat Trump by portraying him as a threat to democracy.

Walz's rise in popularity is also attributed to his legislative achievements that resonate with younger voters beyond his solidly blue state. His stance on various issues has garnered support from communities across the country.

The article concludes by highlighting how Walz's approach has resonated with young voters and how his straightforward language about policy has helped him gain national prominence.
