TikTok Approved Disinformation in Political Ads Despite Ban, Global Witness Report Reveals

According to a report by Global Witness, TikTok approved ads containing election misinformation, despite its ban on political ads. The nonprofit group tested social media platforms' ability to detect election-related falsehoods. While improvements were noted since their last investigation, TikTok approved four out of eight misleading ads. These ads were withdrawn before going live. TikTok has prohibited political ads since 2019.

TikToks Disinformation Approval in Political Ads

Global Witness aimed to assess how well social media companies manage election misinformation. They submitted ads with false claims, such as online voting being possible in the U.S., and misinformation intended to suppress votes, like needing an English test to vote. Some ads even incited violence or threatened electoral staff and procedures.

Social Media Platforms' Response

TikTok's spokesperson, Ben Rathe, stated that although four ads were mistakenly approved initially, they did not appear on the platform. He reiterated TikTok's commitment to enforcing its no-political-ad policy. Facebook, owned by Meta Platforms Inc., performed better by approving only one of the eight ads submitted.

Meta responded by acknowledging the report's limited scope but emphasized their ongoing efforts to enhance policy enforcement. YouTube, owned by Google, excelled by approving four ads but not publishing any. They required additional identification from testers and paused accounts when it wasn't provided.

Challenges in Ad Moderation

The report highlighted that companies often have stricter rules for paid advertisements than for regular user posts. It remains unclear if YouTube would have published the ads had Global Witness provided the necessary identification. Google did not immediately comment on these findings.

Despite improvements in content moderation systems, challenges persist in effectively managing election misinformation on social media platforms. The report underscores the need for continued vigilance and enhancement of policies to prevent the spread of false information during critical times like elections.

The investigation reveals that while some platforms have made progress in detecting misinformation, others still face challenges. This highlights the ongoing need for robust systems to ensure accurate information reaches users during elections.
