Three arrested in connection with Burundi coup bid
Bujumbura, May 15: At least three persons have been arrested on Friday in connection with failed coup against Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza, media reported.
Coup leader Major General Godefroid Nyombare, who is on run, announced on May 13 that he was relieving President Nkurunziza of his duties. The coup attempt against President Nkurunziza's bid to seek a third term was launched while he was in Tanzania, BBC reported.
The president says he has returned to Burundi after being stuck in Tanzania. Nkurunziza is nominated for a third term in office on April 25. The move has been termed unconstitutional by his opponents.
More than 105,000 people have fled the country since the unrest began last month, the UN says. Burundi is the poorest country in the world.
