Thousands Of Hindus Rally In Dhaka Over Alleged Lord Ram Insult, Issue 72-Hour Ultimatum

Thousands of members of Bangladesh's Hindu community gathered in Dhaka on Friday, holding a large torchlight procession to protest against the alleged insult of Lord Ram.

Demonstrators marched through key areas of the capital, demanding the immediate arrest of those accused of disrespecting a sacred image of the Hindu deity.

The protest highlighted growing concerns among the Hindu community regarding religious sensitivity, minority rights, and the protection of religious symbols in the country.

Alleged Disrespect to Lord Ram Sparks Anger

The protests were triggered by allegations that a shoe was deliberately placed on an image of Lord Ram. Many members of the Hindu community described the act as deeply offensive and said it hurt the religious sentiments of millions of devotees.

As news of the incident spread, community organisations and religious groups called for public demonstrations. Protesters carried torches, banners, and placards while raising slogans demanding justice and accountability.

Protesters Give Government 72-Hour Ultimatum

During the rally, protest organisers issued a 72-hour deadline to the government, demanding that the accused individuals be identified and arrested.

Community leaders warned that if authorities fail to act within the specified period, they will intensify their agitation. They also announced plans to submit a memorandum to the Ministry of Religious Affairs and organise further demonstrations across the country.

In addition, protest leaders requested a meeting with government officials to discuss broader concerns regarding the safety, rights, and religious freedom of Bangladesh's Hindu minority community.

Controversy Over Lord Ram Statue Project Adds to Tensions

The latest unrest comes amid another issue that has recently drawn attention within the Hindu community. Authorities reportedly suspended a project to construct an 81-foot-tall statue of Lord Ram in Palashbari, located in the northern Gaibandha district.

The Shri Shri Radha Govinda Temple Committee, which was overseeing the project, claimed that construction was halted following threats from Islamist groups opposed to the initiative.

The suspension has reignited discussions about the ability of religious minorities in Bangladesh to freely practice and express their faith without fear or opposition.

Students and Hindu Organisations Join Rally

The main torch procession began from Shahbagh Square in central Dhaka and moved through several important locations before concluding near the National Press Club.

A large number of Hindu organisations participated in the march, along with students from various universities. Demonstrators called for stronger protection of religious sites, symbols, and cultural traditions.
Earlier in the day, different factions of the Hindu Mahajot also organised separate programmes. One group formed a human chain outside the National Press Club, while another conducted a press conference at the Dhaka Reporters Unity to raise concerns over the incident.

The protests have once again brought attention to the challenges faced by religious minorities in Bangladesh. Community members say incidents involving religious symbols can create insecurity and deepen concerns about social harmony.
