Thousands March in Athens to Commemorate Anniversary of Fatal Police Shooting of Alexandros Grigoropoulos

Several thousand individuals marched in Athens on Friday, marking the anniversary of a teenager's fatal police shooting in 2008. The event saw minor violence as some youths clashed with police. No injuries or arrests were reported following the march. Rioters hurled fuel bombs and stones at riot police, who retaliated with tear gas and stun grenades in Exarcheia, where the shooting took place.

Athens Marks Anniversary of Police Shooting

Despite heavy rain, around 5,000 police officers were deployed across Athens, concentrating on Exarcheia. Authorities used water cannon vehicles, drones, and helicopters to oversee the demonstrations. They also maintained a strong presence near embassies and ministries to ensure security.

Impact of Grigoropoulos' Death

Alexandros Grigoropoulos, a 15-year-old student, was shot by a police officer, leading to days of rioting. His death continues to be a focal point for annual protests by left-wing and student groups, which frequently turn violent. These demonstrations highlight ongoing tensions between authorities and certain community groups.

The police officer responsible for Grigoropoulos' death was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2010 but was released in 2019 after his sentence was reduced. This decision was upheld during a retrial three years later. Another officer involved was convicted as an accomplice and released on parole after serving three years.

Security Measures and Disruptions

To manage the situation, road closures and traffic diversions were implemented during the march. Public transportation faced disruptions, with two central subway stations closed for much of the day. These measures aimed to prevent further escalation of violence and ensure public safety.

The annual demonstrations serve as a reminder of the deep-seated issues surrounding police conduct and accountability in Greece. The events continue to draw attention to the need for dialogue and reform within law enforcement agencies to prevent similar incidents in the future.
