Texas Inmate Exonerated After Nearly 34 Years for Wrongful Conviction
A Texas man, Benjamin Spencer, who spent 34 years in prison for a crime he did not commit, was exonerated on Thursday by a Dallas County judge. The judge ruled that Spencer is actually innocent of the aggravated assault charge for which he was wrongfully convicted.

Spencer, now 59, was initially convicted in 1987 for the murder of Jeffrey Young during a carjacking. Despite maintaining his innocence, he was retried and sentenced to life in prison for aggravated robbery. His conviction was later overturned, leading to his release on bond in 2021.
Dallas County District Attorney's Office
The Dallas County District Attorney's office filed a motion to dismiss the case against Spencer. "This day has been a long time coming. I am relieved and humbled to help correct this injustice," said Dallas County Criminal District Attorney John Creuzot.
Assistant District Attorney Cynthia Garza, who heads the Conviction Integrity Unit, stated, "Benjamin Spencer is actually innocent; there exists no credible or physical evidence that he was in any way involved in this crime." She highlighted that prosecution witnesses, including a jailhouse informant seeking leniency, provided false testimony.
False Testimony and Withheld Evidence
Creuzot pointed out that prosecutors at the time failed to share evidence with the defence that could have excluded Spencer from the crime. This included fingerprints that were not linked to him. The withholding of such crucial evidence violated Spencer's constitutional rights and contributed to his wrongful conviction.
In 2021, after these violations were discovered, Spencer was released on bond. Earlier this year, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals overturned his conviction and sent the case back to Dallas County for review.
National Registry of Exonerations
According to data from The National Registry of Exonerations, Spencer is among the top 60 longest-serving inmates to be declared innocent. His case underscores significant flaws in the justice system that can lead to wrongful convictions and prolonged imprisonment of innocent individuals.
"This day has been a long time coming. I am relieved and humbled to help correct this injustice," said Dallas County Criminal District Attorney John Creuzot.
Spencer's exoneration marks a significant moment in his life and highlights ongoing efforts to address wrongful convictions. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of integrity and fairness within the judicial system.
