Tesla Ignites After Illegal Power Hookup in Tijuana, Damages Property

A driver in Tijuana, Mexico, attempted to power his Tesla using an illegal electricity hookup directly from a powerline. This resulted in the car catching fire and subsequently igniting a neighbouring house. The incident highlights the dangers associated with such illicit connections.

Tesla Fire from Illegal Hookup

Rafael Carrillo, Tijuana's fire chief, mentioned on Tuesday that electric car fires pose significant challenges for the city's firefighters. He noted that the partially burnt Tesla might take several days to completely burn out and could not be moved until then. Firefighters constructed dirt berms around the vehicle to keep it submerged in water.

Challenges Faced by Firefighters

Firefighter Arturo Sánchez explained that they initially received a call on Monday about a fire at an apparently unoccupied house. Upon arrival in a low-income neighbourhood, they discovered that the flames were difficult to extinguish due to the car's lithium batteries. Sánchez realised that the Tesla was connected directly to a powerline.

No injuries were reported from the incident, and the car had California plates. Illegal electricity connections are prevalent in Tijuana and other Mexican cities. Residents often obtain free electricity by connecting wires directly to overhead power lines or tampering with electrical meters to splice into feeder lines.

Hazards of Illegal Electricity Hookups

The voltage and other characteristics of these illegal hookups can vary greatly, creating hazardous conditions. Such practices not only pose risks of fire but also endanger lives due to potential electrical shocks and other related dangers.

The blaze caused by the Tesla was so intense that it set a neighbouring house on fire. The incident underscores the broader issue of illegal electricity connections and their associated risks, which are common in many areas across Mexico.

Efforts to combat these dangerous practices are ongoing, but incidents like this highlight the need for increased awareness and stricter enforcement of electrical safety regulations.

The situation serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to legal and safe methods for electricity usage to prevent such hazardous events.
