Terrorist Attack Outside Manchester Synagogue During Yom Kippur Leaves Two Dead

British police have classified a violent incident outside a synagogue near Manchester as a terrorist attack. On Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, an assailant drove into worshippers and began stabbing them. Two people died, and three others were seriously injured. The attack occurred at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Crumpsall, north Manchester.

Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor of the Metropolitan Police confirmed that counter-terrorism operations are leading the investigation. He stated that authorities believe they know the attacker's identity and mentioned two arrests related to the incident, though details remain undisclosed.

The assault triggered "Plato," the UK's emergency code-word for a marauding terror attack. This led to increased security measures at synagogues across the country. Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the violence and cut short his European summit trip to convene an emergency committee meeting.

Witnesses described how a car rammed into the synagogue gates before the driver emerged with a knife. Chava Lewin, a nearby resident, initially thought she heard fireworks. "The second he got out of the car, he started stabbing anyone near him," she recounted.

Response from Authorities

Greater Manchester Police reported that officers shot and killed the suspect amid fears he was carrying explosives. Video footage on social media showed armed police surrounding a man on the ground near the synagogue while bystanders shouted about a potential bomb threat.

Authorities later conducted a controlled explosion on the suspect's vehicle. King Charles III and Queen Camilla expressed their shock and sadness over the incident, appreciating emergency services' swift actions.

Context of Rising Antisemitism

This attack occurs against a backdrop of increasing antisemitic incidents in the UK following Hamas' October 7, 2023 assault on Israel and subsequent conflict in Gaza. The Community Security Trust reported over 1,500 antisemitic incidents in just six months this year.

"This is every rabbi's or every Jewish person's worst nightmare," said Rabbi Jonathan Romain of Maidenhead Synagogue. He highlighted that Yom Kippur is not only sacred but also a time for mass gatherings.

Manchester has previously experienced terrorism; notably, 22 people died in a suicide bombing at an Ariana Grande concert in 2017. Such events underscore ongoing concerns about safety and security within communities.
