Teamsters Union Declines Endorsement of Trump and Harris Ahead of Presidential Election

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters announced on Wednesday that they would not endorse either Kamala Harris or Donald Trump for the presidency. The union, which has 1.3 million members, stated that neither candidate had garnered enough support from them. This decision comes as both candidates failed to make significant commitments to prioritise the interests of working people over large corporations.

Teamsters Union Rejects Trump and Harris Endorsement

Teamsters President Sean M. O'Brien expressed disappointment, stating, "Unfortunately, neither major candidate was able to make serious commitments to our union to ensure the interests of working people are always put before Big Business." He emphasised that the union sought assurances from both candidates to refrain from interfering in crucial union campaigns and core industries, as well as respecting members' right to strike.

Union Engagement with Candidates

Vice President Harris has consistently engaged with organised labour, making middle-class support a key policy focus. She recently met with a panel of Teamsters on Monday. Meanwhile, Trump also interacted with Teamsters representatives and invited O'Brien to speak at the Republican National Convention, where O'Brien criticised corporate greed.

Despite these interactions, the Teamsters decided not to endorse either candidate just weeks before the November 5 election. This decision contrasts with other major unions like the AFL-CIO and the United Auto Workers, which have already endorsed Harris.

Internal Polling Insights

Internal polling conducted by the Teamsters revealed that Trump holds an advantage over Harris among their members. This insight may have influenced their decision not to endorse either candidate at this time. The union's choice highlights the challenges both candidates face in securing broad-based support from organised labour.

The lack of endorsement from such a significant union underscores the importance of addressing workers' concerns in political campaigns. As the election approaches, both candidates may need to reconsider their strategies to gain favour with influential labour groups like the Teamsters.
