Tariffs Holding Back India: Eric Garcetti On Missed Opportunities As Nations Exit China
Eric Garcetti, the US Ambassador to India, has highlighted the need for India to lower its tariffs. He believes that high tariffs are deterring many companies from entering the Indian market.
In an interview with India Today, Garcetti mentioned that President Donald Trump had points regarding India's tariff rates.

During a speech at the Detroit Economic Club last year, Trump emphasised the importance of reciprocity in trade. He noted that while the US generally doesn't impose tariffs, countries like China and Brazil do. He pointed out that India imposes some of the highest tariffs. Despite this criticism, Trump praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a "great leader" and "great man".
Trade Relations and Tariff Concerns
Garcetti acknowledged Trump's criticisms of India-US trade relations but also praised Modi's leadership. He stated, "President Trump in some ways is right. We have to make sure that we have bigger, bolder conversations." Garcetti highlighted that during this administration, all trade disputes were resolved.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal addressed concerns about potential US tariff hikes on imports. He expressed confidence that India's position as a trusted partner would remain unaffected. Goyal remarked that if tariffs target China, it benefits India; if applied universally, everyone faces the same challenge.
India's Position in Global Trade
Garcetti stressed the importance of reducing tariffs further to attract businesses leaving China. He suggested improvements in transportation and infrastructure alongside trademark protection and workforce training. These steps could enhance India's appeal as a global business hub.
Goyal reiterated India's resilience in global trade dynamics at Business Today's Most Powerful Women 2024 event in Mumbai. He acknowledged Trump's occasional remarks on India's tariffs but emphasised Trump's desire to expand business ties with India.
The ambassador's comments come amid ongoing discussions about India's role in global supply chains. Garcetti believes India can replace reliance on China by scaling up industries like healthcare and electronics for global needs.
