Taliban launched its annual spring-summer offensive named "Azm" (Determination) in late April, vowing nationwide attacks. This summer is expected to be bloodiest summer for a decade.

Taliban militants have increased their attacks on Afghan security forces since launching their annual spring offensive.

NATO's combat mission formally ended in December last year after 13 years, but a small follow-up foreign force named Resolute Support has stayed on to train and support local security forces.
