Sunita Williams, Butch Wilmore Return To Earth Safely After Unplanned 9-Month Space Mission
NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore, alongside fellow American Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov, safely returned to Earth after an unexpected nine-month stay in space.
Their SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, Freedom, splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico near Tallahassee at 5:57 pm ET on Tuesday (3:27 am IST, Wednesday).

During re-entry, the spacecraft endured extreme temperatures of approximately 1,650 degrees Celsius before deploying parachutes for a smooth descent.
A recovery team will retrieve the crew and transport them to NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, where they will undergo a 45-day rehabilitation programme to help them readjust to Earth's gravity after their prolonged exposure to microgravity.
An Unexpected Space Odyssey
Williams and Wilmore originally launched aboard Boeing's Starliner in June last year for what was intended to be a brief eight-day test mission to the International Space Station (ISS). However, a propulsion system failure prevented the spacecraft from returning with its crew, leaving the astronauts unexpectedly stranded in orbit.
Rather than initiating an urgent rescue, NASA reassigned the duo to SpaceX's Crew-9 mission, which arrived at the ISS in September. To accommodate them, Crew-9's roster was reduced from four astronauts to two.
Although unofficially referred to as the "stranded" astronauts, NASA maintained that they could have been evacuated if an emergency arose.
Their prolonged stay in space captivated global audiences, redefining the phrase "stuck at work" and turning "Butch and Suni" into widely recognised names. While some astronauts have spent longer periods in space, few have faced such uncertainty regarding their return.
On Sunday, Crew-9 bid a heartfelt farewell to their ISS colleagues following the arrival of their replacements, Crew-10, earlier in the day.
As they prepared to return home, Nick Hague offered a poignant farewell: "To our colleagues and dear friends remaining on the station... we'll be waiting for you. Crew-9 is going home."
