Sunita Williams And Nick Hague Team Up For Vital ISS Spacewalk: Repairing Key Instruments For Future Research

Sunita Williams, an astronaut of Indian descent, is gearing up for her first spacewalk in over a decade, according to a Times Of India (TOI) report. This mission is part of the upcoming SpaceX Crew-6 journey to the International Space Station (ISS). Known for her significant contributions to space exploration, Williams will undertake crucial tasks outside the ISS. Her expertise in extravehicular activities is vital for maintaining and enhancing space station operations.

Williams and fellow astronaut Nick Hague are set to conduct a spacewalk on 16 January. Their primary objective is to address a "light leak" issue on the NICER X-ray telescope, which affects its data collection capabilities. To prepare, Williams has undergone rigorous training on Earth, simulating spacewalk conditions in advanced facilities.

Spacewalk Preparations And Objectives

The NICER telescope is unique as it focuses on high-energy X-ray phenomena like black holes and neutron stars. This repair marks the first time since the 2009 Hubble mission that a NASA observatory will be serviced in orbit. Additionally, Williams and Hague will prepare for future upgrades to the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) aboard the ISS.

The AMS module studies particles such as cosmic rays, dark matter, and antimatter. The planned upgrades by Williams and Hague are expected to significantly impact ongoing cosmological research. Their work ensures that the ISS remains fully operational and safe for its crew.

Ensuring ISS Readiness

This upcoming spacewalk will be Williams's eighth and Hague's fourth. They will inspect tools and access points to confirm the station's readiness for future maintenance missions. Another spacewalk is scheduled for January 23 to continue these essential upgrades, supporting long-term human presence in space.

Williams has also completed intensive pre-flight training focused on microgravity and spacesuit operations. This preparation is crucial for handling the challenges of working outside the ISS in vacuum conditions. Safety remains a top priority during these extravehicular activities.

Return Plans Adjusted Due To Starliner Delays

Originally scheduled to return from the ISS in February 2025, Williams's return has been postponed to March 2025 due to issues with Boeing's Starliner spacecraft. She traveled to the ISS in June 2024 but will now return via a SpaceX Crew Dragon due to ongoing technical delays with Starliner.

The Starliner has yet to receive certification for human transport due to these delays. Consequently, NASA opted for an alternative plan ensuring Williams's safe return using SpaceX's proven technology.

Williams's upcoming mission highlights her dedication and expertise in advancing space exploration. Her efforts alongside Nick Hague are crucial for maintaining the functionality of vital instruments like NICER and AMS on the ISS.
