Sukhbir Badal Survives Golden Temple Attack: Pakistan Connection Under Investigation

Sukhbir Singh Badal, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt at the Golden Temple in Amritsar on December 4, 2024.

The attacker, identified as Narain Singh Chaura, a former member of the Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), opened fire on Badal while he was on guard duty at the entrance of the holy Sikh shrine as part of a religious penance. Though Badal was unharmed, the incident has raised concerns, particularly about a potential Pakistani connection, which is currently under investigation.

The Attack: A Narrow Escape

The attack comes just one day after Badal began performing religious penance at the Golden Temple, following orders from the Akal Takht due to his party's controversial actions during his tenure, including incidents of sacrilege and police violence. The penance, which involved Badal serving as a guard at the temple, adds a layer of political significance to the attack, which may have been intended to disrupt the already tense political atmosphere in Punjab.

Politically, the attack has sparked intense debates. Both the opposition parties and the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab are pointing fingers at each other, with the SAD and Congress accusing the AAP of failing to ensure proper security. The AAP government, in turn, defended the swift response of the police, praising their role in preventing a larger crisis. However, the incident has highlighted the vulnerability of Punjab's law and order situation, which remains fragile due to political instability, religious tensions, and the potential involvement of external forces.

    The Shooter: Narain Singh Chaura

The assailant, Narain Singh Chaura, is a known figure in the Sikh separatist movement. Having crossed over to Pakistan in 1984, Chaura was involved in smuggling large consignments of weapons and explosives into Punjab. He reportedly wrote a book on guerrilla warfare while in Pakistan, alongside seditious literature that promoted violence. Chaura's ties to the Khalistani movement are well-documented, and he has been involved in several high-profile cases, including the Burail jailbreak case in 2004, where assassins of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh escaped from prison. He has already served jail time in Punjab for his terrorist activities.

    Pakistan Angle Under Investigation

While the attack appears to have been a lone-wolf operation, intelligence sources are probing a potential Pakistani angle. Chaura was armed with a sophisticated 9 mm pistol, a weapon that is often smuggled into India from Pakistan via drone, as reported by India Today.

Given Chaura's extensive history with the Khalistani movement and his past associations with terrorist activities, authorities are considering the possibility that this incident could be part of a larger conspiracy orchestrated across the border. The use of advanced weaponry raises questions about whether this attack was coordinated or if it is part of a broader plan to destabilize the region, as reported by India Today.

The attack has prompted several questions regarding the involvement of external forces, with the possibility of a Pakistani hand in the incident being taken seriously. However, sources have emphasized that Chaura is a hardcore ideologue and it is unlikely that he was manipulated by any political group, even within Punjab.
