Afghanistan is amid a political stalemate with rival presidential candidates failing to resolve month-long disputes over an election aimed at the first democratic transfer of power in the history of the violence-ravaged nation.
The government forces continue to fight the armed opposition troops who have launched operations in Kunduz province in the north and Helmand province in the south.
At least 1,500 Taliban fighters have been reportedly deployed in Kunduz. In Helmand, at least 900 people have been killed in the fighting since June.
The USA is due to pull out a big contingent of its forces from Afghanistan by the end of the year but the deadlock over the transfer of power has delayed the signing of a security agreement with the US over the number of troops to remain.
