Gen. Burhan Seeks International Support Amid Sudan Conflict: Meeting With Eritrean President
Gen. Abdel Fattah Burhan, Sudan's military chief, is seeking international support amidst a conflict with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. His latest effort was a meeting with Eritrea's President Isaias Afwerki to discuss bilateral relations and the conflict in Sudan.
The military chief of Sudan, Gen. Abdel Fattah Burhan, embarked on a trip to Eritrea on Monday in order to meet with President Isaias Afwerki. This marks the latest in a series of international trips undertaken by Burhan since clashes broke out between his army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) led by Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo in mid-April, according to state media reports.
Search for International Support

In light of escalating tensions with the RSF that have spiralled into open conflict and transformed Sudan's capital city Khartoum along with its neighbouring cities Omdurman and Bahri into urban war zones, Burhan has been seeking international backing. The discussions between Burhan and Isaias are expected to centre around bilateral relations as well as the ongoing conflict within Sudan, although no further information was provided.
Fraught Relations Between Eritrea and Sudan
Eritrea and Sudan have had strained relations for several years now. Currently hosting some 126,000 Eritrean refugees who fled political persecution from one of the world's most oppressive nations according to the UN refugee agency; this fact has only added fuel to an already tense relationship. Furthermore, influential tribal groups situated in eastern Sudan such as Beja that have long advocated for establishing their own separate state have received support from Isaias' government which has further complicated matters.
Burhan’s Diplomatic Endeavors
This visit marks Burhan's fourth high-profile diplomatic meeting within just two weeks. In recent days he met with Qatari emir Sheikh among other notable figures. These meetings indicate an aggressive diplomatic strategy aimed at garnering support amidst growing domestic issues.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the ongoing conflict in Sudan and the complexities of its international relations are currently at a critical juncture. The efforts undertaken by Gen. Abdel Fattah Burhan to seek international support for his cause, particularly from countries with which Sudan has historically had strained relations, indicate a desperate attempt to bring stability back to his nation. However, it remains unclear how these diplomatic endeavors will affect the situation on the ground in Sudan or indeed their impact on Sudan's relationships with other nations.
