State Funeral for Pravin Gordhan: Celebrating the Legacy of a South African Leader
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared an official state funeral for Pravin Gordhan, a former Indian-origin freedom fighter and cabinet minister. Gordhan, who passed away at 75 on September 13 after a brief illness, will be honoured in his hometown of Durban. The funeral will take place at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre on Thursday morning.

Gordhan's body was brought to his residence in Pretoria on Tuesday, where it will lie in state until transported to Durban. A Book of Condolence is available at the Department of Public Enterprises office in Pretoria, where he last served as Minister until four months ago. This book allows people to pay tribute to Gordhan's legacy.
Honours and Contributions
In 2019, India awarded Gordhan the Padma Bhushan, its third highest civilian honour, recognising his exceptional service. Previously, he received the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award from the President of India. These accolades make him one of only two South Africans to receive dual honours from India, alongside Ela Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi's granddaughter.
Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana praised Gordhan's understanding of economic transformation and financial management's impact on South Africans' lives. Gordhan served as Finance Minister from 2009 to 2014 and again from 2015 to 2017. His contributions were significant in shaping economic policies during his tenure.
Legacy and Reflections
The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation remembered Gordhan's recent reflections shared by his daughter Priyesha at an event commemorating the Natal Indian Congress's founding by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. In his message, Gordhan highlighted the need for a reset between progressive values and self-interest.
Minister Maropene Ramokgopa stated, "The Book of Condolence is one way for South Africans and citizens of the world to remember former Minister Pravin Gordhan. His fearlessness and unwavering commitment to good governance will forever be remembered." This sentiment echoes the widespread respect for Gordhan's dedication.
Gordhan played a pivotal role in forming the United Democratic Movement (UDF), which contributed to ending apartheid in the 1990s. The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation noted that Gordhan's scientific worldview was complemented by his commitment to democracy and social justice globally.
The funeral service will include ceremonial elements conducted by the South African Police Service as part of a Special Official Funeral Category 2. Following the service, a private cremation will take place. This ceremony reflects Gordhan's significant impact on South Africa's political landscape.
Gordhan's legacy as a leader committed to equality and justice remains influential. His contributions continue to inspire those striving for democratic values and good governance in South Africa and beyond.
