Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Rejects Talks On Katchatheevu Issue With India - Here's What He Said
Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister, Ali Sabry, has dismissed the idea of reopening discussions on Katchatheevu, a territory that India ceded to Sri Lanka over 50 years ago.
This response comes in light of recent statements by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar regarding the island's status.

Sri Lankan FM on Katchatheevu Issue
The Ranil Wickremesinghe administration in Colombo refrained from commenting on the matter, attributing it to a political clash between parties ahead of elections. An official source indicated that the focus was on determining accountability for the decision to transfer ownership of the island to Sri Lanka, rather than contesting its current territorial status.
Criticism of Modi and Jaishankar's remarks has surfaced from various circles in Sri Lanka, including mainstream media and former diplomats, who have labeled the statements as provocative.
In northern Sri Lanka, fishermen's groups have accused Indian leaders of diverting attention from ongoing conflicts over fishing rights in the Palk Strait. They claim that Indian bottom trawlers are depleting marine resources within Sri Lankan waters.

Prof. V. Suryanarayan, a retired senior professor at the Centre for South and Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Madras, emphasized that Sri Lanka's stance on Katchatheevu was clear even before the signing of agreements in 1974 and 1976 that formalized its territorial status.
Katchatheevu has been a topic of contention between India and Sri Lanka, particularly concerning fishing rights and territorial sovereignty. The island, located in the Palk Strait, has historical and strategic significance for both countries.
The recent discourse underscores broader diplomatic tensions and regional complexities between India and Sri Lanka, with discussions on Katchatheevu reflecting deeper issues related to sovereignty, historical agreements, and contemporary geopolitical dynamics in the Indian Ocean region.
