Sri Lanka Responds to Floods and Mudslides: Schools Shut as Deaths Hit 16

Sri Lanka has been facing a severe weather crisis, with heavy rains causing floods and mudslides across the island nation, leading to a tragic death toll of 16 people. The relentless downpour, which began on Sunday, has inflicted widespread destruction, submerging homes, fields, and roads under water and prompting the authorities to preemptively cut off electricity in several areas as a safety measure.

The Education Ministry, in response to the escalating situation, announced the closure of schools on Monday, stating that the decision to reopen them would be contingent on future weather developments. This measure underscores the severity of the current weather conditions and their impact on daily life.

In a detailed account from the Disaster Management Centre, it was reported that twelve individuals lost their lives near the capital city of Colombo and in the remote districts of Rathnapura, Matara, and Galle on Sunday. These fatalities were attributed to individuals being washed away or drowning. Additionally, three lives were claimed by landslides that caused mounds of earth to collapse onto houses, while another individual died due to a tree falling on him.

Further incidents of mudslides in Ratnapura, approximately 86 kilometres southeast of Colombo, resulted in injuries to five people and significant damage to two houses. The Disaster Management Centre also highlighted that by Monday, over 6,000 individuals had been relocated to evacuation centres, with more than 12,000 homes reported as damaged.

To address this crisis, Sri Lanka has mobilized Navy and Army troops to conduct rescue operations and deliver essential supplies such as food to those affected. The country has been battling adverse weather conditions since mid-May, with heavy monsoon rains exacerbating the situation. Prior incidents involving strong winds have also contributed to the calamity, toppling trees and resulting in nine additional fatalities.
