SpaceX, NASA Launch Mission To Bring Home Stranded Astronauts Sunita Williams, Butch Wilmore

After cancelling the planned launch of the the Crew-10 mission to the International Space Station (ISS) at the last minute on March 12, NASA and SpaceX on Friday launched a crewed mission aimed at bringing back astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore. They have been stuck on the International Space Station (ISS) for nearly nine months.

Crew-10 Mission

A Falcon 9 rocket, equipped with a Crew Dragon capsule, lifted off from Florida's Kennedy Space Center at 7:03 PM local time, carrying a team of four astronauts destined for the ISS. The crew includes NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, JAXA astronaut Takuya Onishi, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Kirill Peskov. They are part of the Crew-10 mission, tasked with relieving Williams, Wilmore, and two other crew members currently aboard the station.

Upon arrival and docking at the ISS on March 15, the new crew will spend several days acclimating before taking over duties from the outgoing Crew-9, which is scheduled to depart no earlier than March 19.

US Secretary's Video Message

In a video shared ahead of the launch, US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth said, "I just want to take a brief moment to say we are praying for you," he said. "We wish you Godspeed, and we look forward to welcoming you all home soon." Hegseth also mentioned that "President Trump said to Elon Musk, 'get the astronauts home and do it now' - and they're responding."

He added, "And they're bringing NASA astronauts, [who] also happen to be retired US Navy Capt. Butch Wilmore and retired US Navy Capt. Suni Williams, home."

Originally, SpaceX and NASA had aimed to launch the replacement crew on March 12. However, a last-minute issue with the rocket's ground systems caused a delay. By March 13, SpaceX had addressed the problem by clearing a suspected air pocket from a hydraulic clamp arm, and weather conditions were deemed 95% favorable for a March 15 launch.

Delay By 9 Months

Williams and Wilmore have been in space for nine months following their journey on Boeing's Starliner spacecraft. They, along with US Navy test pilots, were the first to pilot Boeing's Starliner to the ISS. Initially planned as an eight-day mission, their stay was extended due to technical problems with the Starliner, which eventually returned to Earth without crew.

The mission has also sparked political controversy, with former President Donald Trump and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk accusing President Joe Biden of leaving the astronauts stranded on the ISS for political motives.

Trump Slams Viden Administration

President Trump had previously criticized the delay in the astronauts' return, attributing it to the current administration's incompetence. He claimed to have authorized Musk to use SpaceX's resources to rescue the astronauts, highlighting the risks associated with their prolonged stay in space.

Trump also humorously commented on Williams' distinctive hair and the potential dangers of space missions, reaffirming his commitment to ensuring their safe return. Once the astronauts are back, Trump expressed his intention to personally welcome them, underscoring his involvement in resolving the situation. The mission's success is critical not only for the astronauts' safe return but also for the continued collaboration between NASA and private space companies like SpaceX in advancing human space exploration.
