South Asian Bar Association Advocates for Comprehensive Immigration Reform Amid Election Uncertainty
The recent election cycle has been marked by division, with many feeling uncertain about the nation's future and democracy. In response, the South Asian Bar Association (SABA) has called for comprehensive immigration reform, including enhancements to the H-1B programme. "This election cycle was a divisive one, filled with uncertainty and anxiety about the future of our nation and democracy," stated Keerthi Sugumaran, president of SABA North America, and Mona Shah, its executive director.

SABA North America is dedicated to collaborating with President-elect Donald Trump and his administration. Their aim is to ensure that the concerns of their members are addressed across various policy areas affecting the South Asian community. These areas include racial justice, immigration, religious discrimination, reproductive rights, and upholding the rule of law.
Key Priorities for SABA North America
Immigration reform and reproductive justice freedoms are among SABA's top priorities. They also focus on nominating qualified South Asian attorneys. "These issues, which were at the forefront of South Asian voters in this election, will undoubtedly remain key policy issues for the upcoming administration," SABA noted.
In December 2023, SABA submitted comments to USCIS on improving the H-1B programme under the Biden-Harris Administration. They continue to advocate for reproductive justice freedoms, particularly affecting Asian American and South Asian American women. Additionally, they push for endorsements and nominations of qualified South Asian attorneys to various judicial positions, including the US Supreme Court.
SABA remains committed to supporting its members and the broader South Asian community in exercising their constitutional rights and liberties. They work closely with chapters and community partners to safeguard these rights.
