South African Government Engages Experts to Assist Illegal Miners in Disused Gold Mine

The South African government has formed a team to devise a plan to rescue illegal miners trapped in an abandoned gold mine. This decision marks a shift from the earlier stance of not assisting those trapped in the Stilfontein mine in North West province. Previously, officials had blocked access points to the mine to cut off supplies and force the miners to surface for arrest.

Experts Help South Africa Address Illegal Mining

Authorities had initiated an operation named "Close the Hole" aimed at forcing the miners out. However, there are no official figures on how many remain underground. Initial reports suggested up to 4,000 miners might be trapped, but police later revised this estimate to between 350 and 400.

Government's New Approach

A government delegation, led by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, visited the site on Friday. They engaged with both the local community and relatives of those underground. Mchunu acknowledged that while these miners were breaking the law, their lives needed saving. "We need a much quicker process because it is risky and dangerous for them to remain where they are for a longer period," he stated.

The mineshaft is reportedly over 8,000 feet deep, making rescue operations perilous. Mchunu also expressed concerns that some miners might be armed. A team comprising mine safety experts, police, army personnel, and other government departments was set to meet on Friday to formulate a rescue strategy.

Community Concerns and Efforts

Family members of the trapped miners have urged the government to allocate resources for their rescue. Some community members have already taken matters into their own hands by retrieving miners themselves. A decomposed body believed to belong to one of the miners was brought up on Thursday. Authorities are working to identify the individual and determine the cause of death.

Since the government's operation began, significant recoveries have been made from illegal miners. These include 369 firearms, 10,000 rounds of ammunition, cash worth 5 million rand ($275,000), and uncut diamonds valued at 32 million rand ($1.75 million).

Health and Safety Concerns

More than 1,000 miners have emerged from various mines in North West province. Many of them appeared weak, hungry, and unwell after enduring weeks without basic necessities. The dire conditions have heightened calls for urgent intervention from authorities.

The situation remains tense as efforts continue to bring all remaining miners safely to the surface while ensuring legal consequences for their actions. The government's new approach aims to balance humanitarian concerns with law enforcement priorities.
