South Africa Looks to Strengthen Trade Relations with India and China Amidst US Tariff Challenges
South Africa is exploring ways to boost trade with India and China amid potential 30% tariffs from the US, as stated by Deputy President Paul Mashatile. He emphasised the importance of engaging with other nations despite being a major US trading partner. "The geopolitics at the moment really requires that we should be engaging other nations as well," Mashatile remarked to business and community leaders.

At the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation's inaugural breakfast event, Mashatile highlighted South Africa's G20 presidency as a chance to benefit the continent. He stressed the significance of solidarity, saying, "We should use the G20 to make sure that after our presidency, we can look back and say we were able to give not only to South Africa but to the continent."
Trade Relations and Economic Development
Mashatile noted opportunities for implementing the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement, recognising Africa as a substantial market. He mentioned recent interest from the European Union in enhancing collaboration with South Africa. "We must begin to look as a country to where else can we begin to improve trade relations," he said.
Despite strained relations with the US over various issues, South Africa will not impose retaliatory tariffs. Instead, they will continue diplomatic engagement. "President Ramaphosa said let’s not rush, let’s engage; let’s use our diplomatic channels to engage with the US administration," Mashatile explained.
Government Efficiency and Economic Reforms
Addressing government efficiency, Mashatile acknowledged existing efforts similar to those led by Elon Musk in the US. He pointed out Operation Vulindlela's role in tackling government wastage and economic reforms. "We are looking at economic reforms, cutting red tape and looking at areas where there is wastage," he stated.
Mashatile praised Ahmed Kathrada's dedication to democracy for South Africa's Black majority. He highlighted Kathrada's continued activism post-prison. "Even when he came back from prison after many years, he did not go and stay home and say I’m retired," Mashatile said.
Legacy of Non-Racialism and Equality
The deputy president urged the continuation of discussions on Kathrada’s legacy of non-racialism, non-sexism, and gender equality. He emphasised the need for ongoing commitment to these ideals within South African society.
In conclusion, South Africa is actively seeking new trade partnerships while maintaining diplomatic channels with existing partners like the US. The focus remains on economic development and strengthening ties within Africa and beyond.
