South Africa Faces Criticism Over Gold Miners Rescue Efforts Amid Rising Death Toll

Rescuers and volunteers have extracted at least 78 deceased miners and over 160 survivors from an abandoned gold mine in South Africa. The miners had been trapped for months due to a standoff with authorities who demanded their surrender for illegal mining. Hundreds are still believed to be trapped, and the death toll is expected to increase. Criticism has been directed at the government's decision to cut off food and supplies to force them out.

South Africas Gold Miners Rescue Efforts Criticised

Government's Tactics Under Scrutiny

Authorities attempted to "smoke out" the miners by cutting off their supplies, a tactic that has drawn significant criticism. A South African Cabinet minister defended the approach, labelling the miners as "criminals." Rights groups have condemned this strategy, accusing the government of contributing to what they call a "massacre." The second-largest trade union federation in South Africa described it as a display of state negligence.

A court order initiated a rescue operation after a relative of one miner requested intervention. A specialist mining rescue company has been using a small cage to retrieve survivors and bodies from the mine. However, due to safety concerns, company personnel did not enter the shaft; instead, community volunteers descended in the cage to assist.

Challenges in Rescue Efforts

The rescue operation is progressing slowly because only a few individuals can fit in the cage at once. The mine's depth and complex structure add to the challenges. Authorities argue that miners could have exited through another shaft if they wished, with police stating that over 1,000 did so before the official rescue began. Those who surfaced face charges of illegal mining and trespassing.

Civic groups claim that authorities removed ropes and pulley systems used by miners to access shafts and send supplies. These groups argue that the government's refusal to conduct a rescue left many miners to die from starvation or dehydration. The mine is 2.5 kilometers deep with multiple shafts and tunnels, complicating rescue efforts further.

Conditions Underground Revealed

A civic group released videos showing dire conditions underground, filmed by a miner who managed to leave with a cellphone. The footage shows what appear to be dead bodies wrapped in plastic and emaciated miners pleading for help. The videos highlight the severe conditions faced by those trapped underground for months with limited food and water.

Police reported recovering 78 bodies and rescuing 166 survivors since the operation began. A community group noted that nine more bodies were found on Friday, with others recovered earlier by community members attempting rescues themselves. The official rescue continues slowly due to logistical constraints.

Illegal Mining Concerns

Illegal mining is prevalent in South Africa, especially in mines closed due to unprofitability. Informal miners often search for leftover deposits in these abandoned sites. The government estimates there are about 6,000 such mines across the country. Authorities have taken a firm stance against these groups, citing their involvement in criminal activities.

The government claims illegal mining costs South Africa over USD 1 billion annually in lost gold revenue. In the Stilfontein area alone, more than 1,500 people have been arrested for illegal mining over the past year, most of whom are from neighbouring countries like Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Lesotho.

The situation has prompted calls for an independent inquiry into how it escalated so severely. South Africa's second-largest political party, part of the ruling coalition, supports this demand. As rescue efforts continue under challenging conditions, questions remain about accountability and future prevention measures.
