8-Year-Old Miraculously Survives as Bus Crash Kills 45 Easter Pilgrims in South Africa

In a tragic incident on March 29 in Mmamatlakala, South Africa, a bus carrying pilgrims to an Easter festival in rural South Africa met with a horrific accident. The vehicle collided with a bridge on a mountain pass and fell over 150 feet into a ravine, subsequently catching fire and resulting in the death of 45 individuals. Miraculously, an 8-year-old girl survived the crash, albeit with serious injuries, and is currently in stable condition in the hospital.

Tragic Easter Bus Crash in South Africa

This devastating event occurred as millions of South Africans travel across the country to celebrate the long Easter weekend, a period known for its dangerous roads. Despite multiple warnings from authorities urging caution, this accident underscores the perilous state of road travel during holiday seasons.

The bus was transporting worshippers from Botswana to Moria in Limpopo province for the Easter weekend pilgrimage. This year marked the return of the full pilgrimage to Moria, home to the Zion Christian Church, after being paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The church, established in the early 1900s in South Africa, blends Christian beliefs with some African traditions and has around 7 million followers across southern Africa.

Forensic investigators faced challenges in identifying victims due to the severity of the crash and subsequent fire. Dr. Phophi Ramathuba, from the Limpopo provincial health department, noted that only nine of the bodies recovered were likely identifiable. The South African President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his condolences, noting that all victims appeared to be from Botswana.

The incident has drawn attention to South Africa's road safety issues, especially during peak travel times such as Easter. Last year, road crashes claimed 252 lives between Holy Thursday and Easter Monday. The bus crash near Mokopane adds to this grim statistic, highlighting ongoing concerns over vehicle safety and driver caution.

South African Minister of Transport Sindisiwe Chikunga was attending a road safety campaign in Limpopo province when she received news of the crash. Meanwhile, Dr. Ramathuba emphasized the health department's focus on caring for the young survivor, who is receiving expert medical attention.

As forensic teams continue their work at the crash site, local residents like Simone Mayema recall the futile attempts to assist victims amidst flames and wreckage. The community and nation now mourn the loss of lives while holding onto hope for the young girl's recovery.
