Tragedy Strikes Somers: Fire Steals Precious Lives

Heartbreaking Loss

The four children who perished in the inferno were identified as 5, 6, 8, and 12 years old. They resided in one half of the duplex with their mother and three other siblings. Tragically, the mother was absent at the time of the fire, while her 19-year-old daughter, entrusted with caring for the younger children, managed to escape by leaping from a second-story window.

Cause Under Investigation

Authorities are diligently investigating the cause of the fire that struck the close-knit community of Somers, a town with a population of just under 10,000, situated approximately 25 miles northeast of Hartford. While the blaze does not appear to be the result of criminal activity, State Trooper First Class Pedro Muniz emphasized the profound impact it has had on the community.

Community in Mourning

The town's Fire Chief, John Roache, expressed the collective grief and sorrow felt by the community during an afternoon news conference. He stated, "This is a small community where everybody knows everybody else, and these obviously are four kids that are in our community, so it definitely hurts a lot of our members. Our thoughts and prayers go out to this family."

Witness Accounts

A neighbour, who chose to remain anonymous, recounted the harrowing scene that unfolded during the fire. She described people screaming and the three surviving children jumping from the second floor. The neighbour also mentioned that the mother worked at night and often left her daughter in charge of the younger children.

Aftermath and Support

Inspectors were seen surveying the charred remains of the home on Wednesday, with several burnt bicycles and a basketball lying near the front steps. Firefighters managed to rescue three dogs from the inferno, but a litter of puppies perished. The 19-year-old daughter and two of her siblings survived, with one sustaining serious burn injuries and two others suffering minor injuries. The identities of the victims have not yet been released, as their identities are still being confirmed.

The American Red Cross and social service agencies have stepped forward to offer assistance to the family affected by the tragedy. Additionally, the town has established an Angel Fund to collect donations for the family, and GoFundMe pages have been created by family and friends to raise funds for both families.

The Somers community is grappling with an unprecedented tragedy that has left four young lives lost and a family shattered. As the investigation into the cause of the fire continues, the town comes together to offer support and comfort to those affected by this devastating event.
