Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda affiliate, has been waging war an armed insurgency in Somalia.

The group caused outrage in April last year by carrying out an attack on Garrisa University College in Garrisa town of Kenyan. At least 147 people died when gunmen stormed the university at dawn and targeted Christian students.
