Social Media Giant Halts Brazil Operations Over Alleged Censorship
Social media platform X announced on Saturday that it will cease its operations in Brazil. This decision follows threats from Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes to arrest the company's legal representative if they did not comply with court orders. Despite this, X stated that its services will remain accessible to Brazilians.

The company did not explain how it plans to suspend operations while continuing to offer services in Brazil. Earlier this year, X had conflicts with de Moraes over issues related to free speech, far-right accounts, and misinformation on the platform. The company described his recent orders as censorship and shared the document on X.
Free Speech and Legal Challenges
In the United States, free speech is a constitutional right that is more permissive compared to many other countries, including Brazil. In April, de Moraes ordered an investigation into CEO Elon Musk for spreading defamatory fake news and another probe for possible obstruction, incitement, and criminal organisation.
Brazil's political right has long accused de Moraes of overstepping his authority to suppress free speech and engage in political persecution. Whether investigating former President Jair Bolsonaro or ordering the arrest of supporters who stormed government buildings on January 8, 2023, de Moraes has been active in pursuing those he believes are undermining Brazil's democracy.
Company's Response
"Moraes has chosen to threaten our staff in Brazil rather than respect the law or due process," the company stated on X. In a tweet on Saturday morning, Elon Musk, who describes himself as a "free speech absolutist," said de Moraes "is an utter disgrace to justice."
The Supreme Court's press office did not immediately respond to Associated Press email requests for comments or to verify the authenticity of the document shared by X. The company's decision to remove all remaining staff in Brazil was described as "effective immediately."
X's clash with de Moraes highlights ongoing tensions between the platform and Brazilian authorities over content regulation. The situation underscores broader debates about free speech and censorship in different countries.
Despite these challenges, X remains committed to providing its services in Brazil while navigating legal complexities. The company's stance reflects its broader commitment to free speech principles, even as it faces significant legal hurdles.
