Six Russian Mercenaries Killed in Al-Qaida-linked Attack in Central Mali
At least six Russian mercenaries were reportedly killed in central Mali by an al-Qaida-linked group. The extremists, known as JNIM, claimed responsibility for the attack on their media platform. They stated that they ambushed a convoy of Wagner Group mercenaries on Thursday in the Mopti region, resulting in fatalities and the destruction of vehicles.

A security official from Mali confirmed the attack on Russian soldiers took place on Thursday. Several individuals were killed while stationed at a checkpoint in the country's centre. The official, who requested anonymity due to lack of authorisation to speak to the media, provided this information on Saturday.
Wagner Group's Role in Mali
Russia has taken advantage of strained relations between Western nations and coup-affected countries in West Africa. This has allowed them to deploy fighters and extend their influence. The Wagner Group has been active in the Sahel region, which lies south of the Sahara Desert. They have been profiting from mineral resources seized in exchange for providing security services.
Since late 2021, following a military coup, Wagner has been present in Mali. They replaced French troops and international peacekeepers to combat militants threatening communities in central and northern regions for over a decade. However, Wagner has faced accusations of participating in raids and drone strikes that have resulted in civilian casualties.
Previous Attacks on Wagner
This incident follows months after another deadly attack on the group. Approximately 50 Wagner fighters were killed by an al-Qaida ambush along the border with Algeria. This highlights ongoing security challenges faced by foreign mercenaries operating in the region.
The situation underscores the complex dynamics in Mali and surrounding areas, where various groups vie for control and influence amid ongoing conflicts. The presence of foreign mercenaries like Wagner adds another layer to these challenges.
