Singapore Flight Horrors: Several Passengers Suffer Spinal Injuries - Here's Why

A Bangkok hospital has stated that several passengers from the Singapore Airlines flight, which encountered severe turbulence, will require spinal surgery. Tragically, one passenger lost their life in this rare in-flight turbulence incident, as reported by AP.

The incident occurred earlier this week when a Boeing 777-300ER, operating as flight SQ321 from London to Singapore, experienced what an airline official described as "sudden extreme turbulence" over Myanmar.

This resulted in passengers and crew being thrown about the cabin, with some hitting the ceiling. The severity of the situation prompted the flight to make an emergency diversion to Bangkok, as per The Guardian Report. Among the injured passengers, an Australian woman suffered a spinal injury, leaving her with no sensation from her waist down. Additionally, others onboard are being treated for skull and brain injuries.

Of the 211 passengers and 18 crew onboard, 104 people were injured. While some received treatment for minor injuries and continued their travels, approximately 79 individuals remained in Bangkok on Thursday, with most still hospitalized. Notably, 41 of these patients are being treated at the Samitivej Srinakarin hospital.

Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade reported that more than 50 Australians were on the flight, with 12 citizens and one permanent resident remaining hospitalized. Among them, three Australians are being treated in an intensive care unit, as reported by The Guardian.

Keith Davis, an Australian passenger who was onboard with his wife Kerry, shared their harrowing experience from his hospital bed. He described his wife's severe spinal injury, expressing the shock of the incident occurring just as they were nearing the end of their journey.

Davis highlighted the suddenness of the turbulence, emphasizing that within seconds, passengers found themselves thrown into chaos. He recounted the traumatic experience of witnessing his wife sustain her injuries and the immediate response from fellow passengers and crew.

Meanwhile, Adinun Kittiratanapaibool, director of Bangkok's Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital, provided updates on the medical treatment being administered to the injured passengers. He mentioned that surgeries have been conducted to address various injuries, including spinal surgeries and others for bone, muscle, and other injuries.

In response to the incident, Singapore Airlines announced adjustments to its policies regarding turbulence management. These include halting in-flight meal service when the seatbelt sign is on and crew members returning to their seats and fastening their seatbelts. However, the airline clarified that wearing seatbelts throughout the entire flight is not mandatory, as deaths and serious injuries from severe turbulence are rare occurrences, as per media reports.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of air travel and underscores the importance of safety measures to mitigate risks associated with turbulence.
