Singapore Authorities Detain Three Self-Radicalised Men Planning Armed Violence Overseas Amid Israel-Hamas Conflict

Singapore's Internal Security Department (ISD) has detained three men, reportedly self-radicalised online due to the Israel-Hamas conflict. They had allegedly planned to engage in armed violence abroad. The individuals are Mohamad Latiff Rahim, a 41-year-old digital marketing director; Muhammad Indra Aqmal Effendy, a 21-year-old lift mechanic; and Nurisham Yusoff, a 44-year-old security guard.

Three Detained in Singapore for Planning Violence

"While their cases are not related, their radicalisation was either triggered or accelerated by the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict," the ISD was quoted as saying by Channel News Asia CNA. All three Singaporeans were separately self-radicalised online and had made preparations to engage in armed violence overseas, the ISD said.

Security Concerns and Measures

The Singapore Ministry of Defence has acknowledged concerns about national servicemen potentially using their military skills for criminal activities or terrorism. They have implemented security systems within the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) to identify potential threats. National service is mandatory for male youths in Singapore, lasting two years.

Each of the detained men took steps to learn about weapons. One even visited a shooting range in Bangkok. Their arrests occurred in October 2024. According to reports, one of them was prepared to carry out attacks within Singapore itself.

The Ministry of Defence emphasised the importance of these security measures, stating that it is crucial to screen and detect any personnel who might pose security risks. This proactive approach aims to prevent any misuse of skills acquired during national service.

These developments highlight the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in addressing self-radicalisation and ensuring national security. The situation underscores the need for vigilance and effective measures to counter potential threats from within the country.
