Extreme Turbulence on Singapore Airlines Flight Results in Casualties
On Tuesday, Singapore Airlines disclosed a harrowing event involving sudden extreme turbulence that impacted flight SQ321, traveling from London Heathrow to Singapore. The incident occurred over the Irrawaddy Basin at an altitude of 37,000 feet, approximately 10 hours after departure on May 20. This severe turbulence led to the aircraft, a Boeing 777-300ER, descending 6,000 feet within about three minutes. Among the 229 individuals on board were at least three Indian nationals.

The aftermath of this unexpected turbulence was tragic, resulting in the death of a 73-year-old British passenger and injuries to more than two dozen others. The deceased, whose identity has not been disclosed, is believed to have suffered a heart attack, according to Kittipong Kittikachorn, the General Manager of Suvarnabhumi Airport. In response to the medical emergency, the pilot diverted the flight to Bangkok, where it landed on May 21.
Singapore Airlines confirmed that 18 passengers were hospitalized following the incident, with another 12 receiving treatment. The airline has extended its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and apologized for the traumatic experience endured by passengers and crew. A total of 211 passengers and 18 crew members were on board, representing a diverse international demographic.
The nationalities of the passengers included individuals from Australia, Canada, Germany, India, Indonesia, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Malaysia, Myanmar, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. Singapore Airlines is actively providing assistance to those affected and is cooperating with authorities in Thailand for the ongoing investigation.
In light of this incident, Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong expressed his condolences and emphasized the nation's efforts in supporting all involved. Boeing also extended its sympathies and offered support to Singapore Airlines. This event has highlighted the potential dangers of severe turbulence which can lead to significant injuries or even fatalities.
Experts suggest that the turbulence encountered by SQ321 could be linked to cyclonic circulation over the southwest Bay of Bengal moving northeastwards. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of air travel and the importance of safety measures during flights.
Singapore Airlines has provided hotlines for relatives seeking information and is working closely with relevant authorities to investigate this distressing occurrence thoroughly.
