Sikhs in US raise money for poor needy students in Punjab
Washington, Oct 6: Sikhs in the US have raised USD 210,000 to provide financial assistance to poor and needy students in Punjab for higher education.
The fund was raised at a glittery gala, featuring pop singer Jaz Dhami, organised by Gajinder Singh Ahuja, chairman of Sikh Human Development Foundation (SHDF), a statement said said Monday.
Gurcharan Singh Kanwal of Virginia, was the highest donor with USD 50,000.
"We have been blessed with gifts from our Creator and we ought to share these with those who need it the most," he said in his remarks.
In recognition of his commitment and contributions towards higher education for the youth, Kanwal and his wife Kamaljit Kaur were honored with the SHDF Community Higher Education Empowerment Award.
