Sierra Leone Declares State of Emergency Following Second Mpox Case in Four Days

Sierra Leone has declared a state of emergency following the detection of its second mpox case within four days, according to health officials. The health ministry noted that neither patient had recent contact with infected animals or sick individuals. The first case involved travel only to Lungi, an airport town in the northern Port Loko District, between December 26 and January 6.

Sierra Leone Faces Mpox Emergency Situation

Both patients are currently receiving medical care in Freetown, the capital city. Mpox, also referred to as monkeypox, was first identified in 1958 when scientists observed outbreaks of a pox-like illness in monkeys. Historically, human cases were mostly reported in central and West Africa among those who had close contact with infected animals.

Mpox Transmission and Global Spread

In 2022, it was confirmed that mpox could spread through sexual contact, leading to outbreaks in over 70 countries that had not previously reported cases. This marked a significant shift in the understanding of how the virus spreads among humans.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has been severely impacted by the epidemic, with approximately 43,000 suspected cases and around 1,000 deaths reported in Africa this year alone. This highlights the ongoing challenges faced by countries in managing the spread of the virus.

Historical Context and Health Challenges

Sierra Leone was at the centre of the 2014 Ebola outbreak, which was the deadliest recorded in history. The outbreak primarily affected West Africa and resulted in nearly 4,000 deaths in Sierra Leone out of more than 11,000 globally. The country also suffered a significant loss of healthcare workers during this crisis.

The current situation with mpox underscores the need for vigilance and effective public health measures to prevent further spread. Authorities are working to contain the virus and provide necessary treatment to those affected.

Sierra Leone's experience with past outbreaks has equipped it with valuable lessons in handling infectious diseases. However, the emergence of new cases like mpox presents ongoing challenges for its healthcare system.
