Shia cleric execution row: Kuwait recalls ambassador from Iran

Kuwait City, Jan 5: Amid ongoing tension in Iran over execution of Shia cleric, Kuwait has recalled its ambassador from Iran, media reported.

The decision has been taken due to regional row over the execution of cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr and 46 others in Saudi Arabia on January 2, reported Kuwait News Agency.

Kuwait recalls envoy from Iran

Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr was an outspoken critic of the Saudi government, had been calling for more rights for the kingdom's marginalized Shiite community.

Born in Saudi Arabia, Nimr studied in Iran and Syria. He had been sharing brittle relationship with Saudi authorities since his return to Saudi Arabia in 1994.

Saudi Arabia severed its diplomatic ties with Iran in response, followed by Bahrain and Sudan.

The US, UN and Turkey are among those calling for calm in the region.
