Grammy-Winning Iranian Singer Shervin Hajipour Faces Prison for Protest Anthem
Iranian singer Shervin Hajipour, known for his Grammy-winning protest anthem, has been sentenced to over three years in prison for supporting the 2022 protests sparked by Mahsa Aminis death.
In a concerning turn of events, Iranian singer Shervin Hajipour, who gained international recognition for his Grammy-winning anthem supporting the 2022 protests over the death of Mahsa Amini, has been sentenced to more than three years in prison.

Hajipour's Social Media Post Reveals Sentence
Hajipour took to Instagram on Friday, coinciding with Iran's parliamentary election, to share what appeared to be a portion of the judgment against him. The post disclosed that he received a three-year, eight-month sentence on charges of "propaganda against the system" and "encouraging people to protest." The court's decision was influenced by Hajipour's perceived lack of remorse for publishing the song.
Additional Restrictions Imposed
In addition to the prison sentence, Hajipour was issued a two-year travel ban and ordered to compose a song about "US crimes" and make online posts about these alleged offenses. Despite expressing gratitude to his lawyers and agent for their support, Hajipour refrained from naming the judge and prosecutor involved in the case to avoid potential insults and threats.
Hajipour's Anthem and the Protests
Hajipour's song, titled "Baraye" (meaning "For" in English), resonated deeply with young Iranians who took to the streets to protest against the country's ruling theocracy following Amini's death in September 2022. The lyrics captured the reasons for their dissent, including the desire to dance freely and the fear associated with expressing affection. The protests escalated into calls for the overthrow of Iran's clerical rulers, resulting in a severe security crackdown that claimed the lives of over 500 individuals and led to the detention of more than 22,000.
Recognition at the Grammys
Hajipour's powerful anthem caught the attention of the international community, leading to his recognition at the Grammy Awards. US First Lady Jill Biden presented Hajipour with the Grammys new song for social change special merit award during last year's ceremony. Biden praised the song as a poetic call for freedom and women's rights, highlighting its global impact despite Hajipour's arrest.
Ongoing Repression in Iran
Hajipour's sentencing is part of a broader pattern of arrests, imprisonments, and harassment faced by activists, journalists, and artists in Iran since the demonstrations. Notable among those imprisoned is Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi. Human rights organizations, such as the New York-based Center for Human Rights in Iran, have condemned Hajipour's sentence, demanding his immediate release and emphasizing the importance of free speech and expression.
The sentencing of Shervin Hajipour serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by individuals who dare to express dissent in Iran. His case highlights the urgent need for international attention and support to ensure the protection of basic human rights and the freedom of artistic expression in the country.
