Sheikh Hasina Slams Yunus: Says He Took Power With Militants, Risking Bangladesh’s Sovereignty

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has launched a sharp attack on interim government chief Muhammad Yunus, accusing him of selling out the country to the United States and seizing power with the backing of militants. Her remarks come amid growing friction between Yunus and Army Chief Waker-uz-Zaman, who has demanded that elections be held by December this year.

In a Facebook post, Hasina invoked her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, stating that he was assassinated for refusing to surrender St. Martin's Island to the United States. "When America wanted St. Martin's Island, my father did not agree. He had to give his life. And that was my destiny. Because I never had the thought of selling the country to stay in power," she wrote. She claimed that Yunus, in contrast, is doing exactly what her family stood against.

According to Business Today, Hasina also alleged that Yunus has formed an alliance with banned militant outfits and released convicted terrorists from jail. "Now prisons are empty. They released everyone. Now Bangladesh is the reign of those militants," she said. She condemned the ban on the Awami League as unconstitutional and accused Yunus of making illegal changes to the constitution without a mandate or parliamentary approval.

Her son, Sajeeb Wazed, echoed the criticism in a post on X, calling Yunus a "dictator" and accusing him of enabling mob violence, false cases, and political vendettas against Awami League members, journalists, judges, and civil servants. He also accused Yunus of risking Bangladesh's sovereignty by appointing foreign citizens to key national posts, including the National Security Adviser (Khalilur), Special Envoy (Lutfey), and BIDA head (Ashiq)-individuals he claims have foreign allegiances and are working for the interests of the US, UK, and Singapore.

These developments have further intensified the political standoff, with Yunus's refusal to commit to elections pushing Bangladesh into a deepening constitutional crisis.
