Sheikh Hasina and Niece Tulip Siddiq Get Life Terms in Major Land‑Scam Case

A high profile corruption case involving a government township project has led to severe convictions for Bangladesh's ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her niece, British Labour Party MP Tulip Siddiq.

The verdict was delivered in Dhaka on Monday, marking another major setback for the former ruling family, much of which is now living abroad.

How the Court Reached Its Verdict

Dhaka's Special Judge's Court, presided over by Rabiul Alam, concluded that Sheikh Hasina had abused her authority as prime minister while overseeing the land project. The court found that Tulip Siddiq played a role by unlawfully influencing her aunt to secure a plot for her mother and siblings.

Sheikh Rehana, Ms. Siddiq's mother, was identified as the principal beneficiary in the scheme and received a seven year prison sentence. Fourteen additional individuals were named as suspects in the case.

Siddiq Rejects Allegations and Points to Political Targeting

Tulip Siddiq, who represents the Hampstead and Highgate constituencies in the British Parliament, had previously denied the corruption charges. She reiterated that the case was built on "fabricated accusations and driven by a clear political vendetta."

Her political ties had already forced her resignation from a ministerial role earlier in January because of the growing pressure surrounding her relationship with Ms. Hasina.

Trials in Exile and Absence

Sheikh Hasina, who has been living in exile in India, has not appeared in court for any of the proceedings. All of her trials, including this one, have taken place in absentia.

She was handed a death sentence in November for crimes against humanity relating to the violent response to the mass uprising that toppled her fifteen year government the previous year. Monday's case saw no defence lawyers appointed on behalf of any of the accused, including Ms. Siddiq, Ms. Rehana, or the other family members implicated.

Additional Sentences in Linked Township Cases

Legal troubles for the family continue to mount. In three related cases heard on November 27, a separate court sentenced Sheikh Hasina to twenty one more years in prison. Her son and daughter were each given five year terms tied to the same township development project.

Ms. Rehana remains outside Bangladesh, and Ms. Siddiq's siblings are also abroad as they face additional charges stemming from last year's uprising.
