Seven Die In Qatar Helicopter Crash As Turkish Defence Ministry Confirms Soldier, Aselsan Staff Among Victims

Seven people were killed after a military helicopter crashed in Qatar's territorial waters during what authorities described as a routine mission, with officials initially confirming six deaths before later announcing that the seventh missing officer had also been found dead.

The crash took place on Sunday and triggered an immediate search and recovery operation after the helicopter went down with seven people on board. Qatar's Defence Ministry said the aircraft suffered a "technical malfunction" while carrying out "routine duty."

Search Operation Ends After Missing Officer Found

Earlier in the day, Qatari authorities had confirmed that six bodies had been recovered from the crash site, while rescue teams continued searching for another officer identified as Capt Saeed Samekh.

Later, Qatar's Interior Ministry said the search operation had concluded after the body of Capt Samekh was found, taking the total death toll to seven.

The Interior Ministry also expressed condolences to the families of those killed in the incident.

Victims Included Qatari Personnel, Turkish Officer And Civilians

Qatar identified the victims as Capt Mubarak Al Marri, Sgt Fahad Al Khayarin and Corp Mohammed Mohammed from the Qatari armed forces.

Also killed were Maj Sinan Tastekin from the Qatar-Turkey joint forces, along with Turkish civilians Suleiman Kahraman and Ismail Can.

The Defence Ministry reiterated that the helicopter had suffered a "technical malfunction" during "routine duty", while the Qatari ministries extended condolences to the victims' families following the fatal crash.

Turkey Confirms Death Of Soldier And Defence Company Staff

Turkey's Defence Ministry separately confirmed that one Turkish soldier and two personnel from Turkish defence company Aselsan were among those killed in the crash.

According to the Turkish ministry, the helicopter went down after a technical issue arose during a training flight.

It added that Qatari authorities would carry out inspections to establish the exact cause of the crash.

UAE Extends Condolences As Regional Tensions Remain High

The UAE extended condolences to the families of the victims and expressed solidarity with both Qatar and Turkey following the incident.

The crash comes at a time of heightened regional strain. Qatar has been intercepting missiles and drones launched from Iran since February 28, when Israel and the US began a military campaign against Tehran.

While officials have linked the helicopter crash to a technical malfunction rather than any security incident, the accident has occurred against the backdrop of continuing military alertness in the region.
