Vladimir Putin Addresses Challenges in Ukraine War Timeline and Endorses Modi's BRICS Perspective

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently acknowledged the challenges in determining a timeline for ending the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. However, he expressed confidence in Russia's eventual victory. He appreciated Prime Minister Narendra Modi's concern over the situation. Putin also endorsed Modi's description of BRICS as a non-western rather than an anti-western group.

Putin on Ukraine War and Modis BRICS Views

During a meeting with senior editors from BRICS nations at his residence near Moscow, Putin hinted at discussing further promotion of Indian films in Russia when he meets Modi. Modi is expected to attend the BRICS Summit in Kazan on October 22-23. The Russian leader referred to Modi as a "friend" and expressed gratitude for India's concern regarding the conflict.

BRICS Expansion and Economic Impact

The BRICS group, initially comprising five countries, has expanded to include Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the UAE. Putin emphasised that BRICS should not be viewed as a bloc-style organisation. He stated that even non-member countries could benefit economically from its development. The group represents 24% of global GDP and 41% of the world's population.

Putin highlighted that BRICS was never intended to oppose anyone. "The Indian prime minister put it aptly," he said, referring to Modi's statement that BRICS is not anti-Western but non-Western. This distinction sets it apart from other international groups.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict and NATO Involvement

Putin criticised the US and NATO for their roles in escalating the conflict in Ukraine, which began in February 2022. He claimed that NATO professionals are involved in precision weapon delivery systems used by Ukraine's army. "NATO is waging a war against us," he stated, asserting that Russia will ultimately prevail.

The Russian military has become one of the most combat-effective and technologically advanced forces globally, according to Putin. He predicted that NATO would eventually tire of engaging in this conflict with Russia. "We will have the upper hand," he declared through an interpreter.

India's Role and Peace Negotiations

Putin expressed willingness to negotiate peace but accused Ukraine of withdrawing from previous efforts. He mentioned India, China, and Brazil as countries Russia is in contact with to resolve the conflict. Modi had previously advocated for an early peaceful resolution during discussions with both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

When asked about India's potential role in peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, Putin acknowledged Modi's concern and described him as a "friend." Russia appreciates India's involvement in seeking a peaceful solution to the conflict.

BRICS Common Currency and Cultural Exchange

Addressing questions about a common currency for BRICS, Putin noted that progress is slow and cautious on this front. He also mentioned the popularity of Indian movies in Russia and suggested further boosting this sector during his upcoming meeting with Modi.

Putin highlighted India's pharmaceutical and automotive industries while acknowledging New Delhi's decisions to protect its interests. He expressed optimism about finding common ground to promote Indian films in Russia if there is mutual interest.

The Russian leader also voiced concerns over rising tensions in Gaza and mentioned inviting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to BRICS events. Additionally, he accused the US of trying to hinder China's development and provoking tensions by involving NATO allies like Australia in Asia.
