Senegal's Ruling Party PASTEF Secures Majority in Parliament to Implement Key Reforms
Senegal's ruling party, PASTEF, achieved a significant victory in the legislative elections, securing 130 out of 165 seats. This result was announced by the national vote counting commission on Thursday. The win provides President Bassirou Diomaye Faye with a strong mandate to implement the reforms he promised during his campaign. These reforms focus on tackling corruption, improving the fishing industry, and optimising the country's natural resources.

Before this election, PASTEF held only 56 seats in the National Assembly. The opposition coalition led by former President Macky Sall had a narrow majority with 83 seats. Faye's election in March was based on an anti-establishment platform. He stated that the absence of a majority hindered his ability to fulfil his campaign promises. In September, he dissolved the opposition-led parliament, leading to an early legislative election.
Senegal's Political Landscape
The main opposition coalition, led by Macky Sall, secured 16 seats in the recent elections. Sall extended his congratulations to PASTEF on X on election day. Two other prominent opposition leaders conceded defeat shortly after the polls closed on Sunday. The peaceful voting process was praised by international observers from organisations like the African Union and ECOWAS.
Voting in Senegal, known for its stability in West Africa, proceeded calmly despite sporadic clashes during the electoral campaign between rival supporters. Observers commended the smooth conduct of the elections and highlighted the maturity of Senegalese democracy.
Faye's Leadership and Youth Support
Bassirou Diomaye Faye became Africa's youngest elected leader at 44 years old in March, just weeks after his release from prison. His rise reflects widespread dissatisfaction among Senegal's youth regarding the country's direction. This sentiment is common across Africa, which has a young population and leaders often accused of holding onto power for extended periods.
The recent legislative victory grants Faye a clear path to pursue his ambitious reform agenda. His focus includes addressing corruption and enhancing economic sectors like fishing and natural resources management.
The successful election outcome marks a turning point for Faye's administration, enabling him to move forward with his plans without previous parliamentary constraints. The support from Senegal's youth played a crucial role in this political shift.
